5\section*{The creature. From the sewers.}
6
7This wasn't going to happen. Again. Gene Beaver pulled off his light
8suede jacket and sighed. Then he sighed again. He had started as a
9trainee sewer inspector three months ago and immediately heard the
10rumors. Rumors of a creature in the sewers.
11
12Three years ago he had been happy. With a kid and another on the
13way. Wife at home, making dinner. The whole nine yards. Then he came to
14town. The kid. The prodigy they called him. Gene hated him. Hated him
15enough to kill him? Perhaps. Or perhaps not. Either way, Gene hated him.
16
17Two and half months later, his wife left him. With the kid. The kid from
18out of town. Gene hated him, but he couldn't do anything about it.
19
20It was Christmas, but Gene didn't feel jolly. Didn't feel jolly at
21all. His wife was gone with the kids, and the kid and Gene was
22alone. Alone at Christmas. The worst time of year to be alone. It was
23sad. Suddenly, Gene sobbed.
24
25No, this isn't right! He thought. Gene decided to change his life, to
26make it better. A new life, in a new town.
27
28Three years later, here he was. In the sewer, with a creature that
29didn't show up.
30
31Suddenly, Gene heard a sound. A sound from behind! Suddenly he turned
32and came face to face with it! The creature! The rumors were real! The
33creature was real!
34
35Gene died quickly. In the sewers.
36
37200 miles away, Louise shuddered in her sleep. The man next to her woke
38and looked at her. And smiled!

41
42
43
44``Mommy? Where's Daddy?'' The questions kept
45penetrating Louise's skull like a rusty icepick that had been
46left outside too long. Long enough to develop rust. Cancer for
47metal, Louise's father had always said in his father-voice. Now he
48was dead. Like Gene.
49
50
51
52``Daddy isn't here, sweetheart! We live with Tolkien now, remember?''
53Louise had left Gene for Tolkien three years ago. It had been the
54best years of her life. Until now. The kids made it that way. The
55kids with their kid questions and their kid faces. Why were they
56like that? They were kids, that's why.
57
58
59
60Louise turned around. Suddenly! The kid winced. Louise slapped it
61with her hand. Blood poured out of the mark left by her wedding
62ring. Tolkien had bought it. On a Sunday.
63
64
65
66They had visited Tolkien's parents. They lived in a small farmhouse
67just off Route 66 in the desert. Miles to the neares neighbor. They
68had horses, and Louise loved to ride them. Tolkien's parents were
69rich. But it didn't show in the way they dressed. Tolkien's dad
70wore shirts and blue jeans. Tolkien's mom wore shirts and blue
71jeans. Tolkien had picked up the habit. He wore shirts and blue
72jeans too. Soon, Louise were wearing shirts and blue jeans.
73
74
75
76It was Sunday. Louise and Tolkien rode to town on a mighty steed.
77They stopped at a jewellery store. Tolkien and Louise went inside
78the jewellery store. Inside, the owner of the jewellery store
79looked them up and down. She was the owner of the jewellery store,
80and she didn't like poor people in her jewellery store, of which
81she was the owner.
82
83
84
85``Get out of my jewellery store!'' She said. ``We don't like poor
86people in this jewellery store! I own this jewellery store!'' The
87owner said.
88
89
90
91``I have money!'' Tolkien said. He showed his money.
92
93
94
95``Oh.'' The owner of the jewellery store said. ``Oh. Please shop. This
96is my jewellery store''.
97
98
99
100``Thank you.'' Tolkien said. ``I will'' he said.
101
102
103
104Tolkien picked out a ring. He gave the money to the owner of the
105jewellery store.
106
107
108
109``Keep the change'' Tolkien said to the owner of the jewellery
110store.
111
112
113
114``Thank you very much'' the owner of the jewellery store said. Now
115she could retire and buy a boat. Tolkien had been the 10.000th
116customer and she had enough money to buy a boat and retire. So she
117did, the next day.
118
119
120
121In the meantime, Louise was happy with Tolkien. Tolkien wore shirts
122and blue jeans. Louise wore shirts and blue jeans. The kids wore
123pajamas. This was why Louise hated them.
124
125
126
127She had been giving them arsenik for dinner every night. Her high
128school biology teacher had taught her to make it in exchange for
129sex. Louise had been 14 years old and she loved it. So did the
130teacher. Louise told everything to the principal and he was fired.
131Then he commited suicide. Louise didn't care.
132
133
134
135Louise gave arsenik to her children. But what she didn't know, was
136that the kids vomited from it. They vomited into the air ducts of
137the house. And there the dust became infested with arsenik. Then
138Louise and Tolkien breathed it and then they died.

142The End.
