When you first open Vail, you are using the "straight key". You can press the button labeled "Key" to send a beep, and you will hear a tone.
When someone sends something back, you will hear a lower tone.

Practice Repeaters
If you click on the arrow next to the repeater name (probably "General"), you will see a list of options.
Some of these are "local" or "practice" repeaters:
nothing you send will go to the Internet.
- Fortunes - Sends a fortune cookie text every so often.
- Echo - Will echo back whatever you enter, with a delay.
- Null - Does absolutely nothing. Amateur radio operators call this a "dummy load".
